Webs.com Is very nice, has live help chat, and has a built in sight design helper. And has very cheap prices. I use it myself, but another one is Godaddy.com Witch i have never used, but has good reviews.

    Hope This Helps, Blazr

48 hours for a full domain name to be registered is quite normal.
If you’re purchasing a full domain – like yourname.com – there is no legitimate provider can make it available immediately.
If you require immediate use, try a free sub-domain – like yourname.webs.com

I’m sorry you had such trouble with 1and1. I have used 1and1 for almost 10 years now and I too have had problems with CS. I’ve only stayed with them because they’re Domain Management software is top notch.

Have you tried GoDaddy.com? They are pretty cheap and easy to setup. However, the CS is not always consistent but worth the try.

The request from 1and1 to receive proof of your identity is highly unusual and is something I have only ever experienced with registering Canadian domain names (.ca).

Also, most registrars will make your newly purchased domain name available to you to begin using within a few minutes, if not instantly. Someone answered above that you can’t use a domain until 24 to 48 hours after the domain is registered. This is not true.

The 24 to 48 hours wait time applies only to the time it takes for all of the Whois servers around the world to get updated with the new domain name information, including owner information and DNS servers. What this means to you is that your domain name will not resolve 100% of the time to your website (or parked page) until all Whois servers are updated with your domain’s DNS servers. This is what takes 24 to 48 hours. Some registrars (like 1and1) will make you wait before you can use your new domain, but GoDaddy and Moniker (and most others) do not make you wait.

You would do well to go with GoDaddy.com. I have been using them for years and their customer service is very good. Their prices are also some of the lowest in the industry. The user interface can be a bit aggravating, but if you only have a few domain names, it won’t be a big deal.

My registrar of choice is Moniker.com because their prices are also very low and their user interface is far superior to that of GoDaddy (very important when you manage hundreds of domain names, as I do), but their customer service is not great. Moniker also claims to have never lost a domain name (through fraud, theft, etc.).

If you only have a few domain names and you want excellent customer service, go with GoDaddy. If you own 50+ domains and don’t care about great customer service, but ease of portfolio management is a major factor, then go with Moniker.
