If I ever want to do professional work in New York, I know I’ll need one eventually, but I’ve heard from friends in the business that it isn’t recommended to get your card shortly after graduating because of the complications of getting non-Equity work once you are Equity. When is a good time to get an Equity card, and once you have enough Equity points do you have to become part of Equity?
Is it recommended to get an Actor’s Equity card?

It is always a good idea to get your Equity card when you are ready to be a real professional actor. Of course you have to qualify for it, you do not just go get it.
