Would someone take a quick look at my profile and let me know if I would qualify for a position within the reserves or guard as an 09L Interpreter/Translator. Let me know if there may be ANY issues post-enlistment and what to expect if I find myself contractually obligated with no hope of getting into program.

Not sure if I’m leaving any details out (can add if need be), but that is my immediate picture. My biggest concern is obtaining the security clearance for this position plus getting a seat in the language school if I’m approved via testing, etc…
I’m considering also to apply for a position requiring a SECRET security clearance with a government contractor, completing the contract time and maybe enlisting before I turn 40 next year.
This may give me more time to brush up on my Farsi/Arabic and become more specific with dialects.
Possible that I may be able to go full-active in one year upon wife completing school and having ability to move around
The “one conviction” should have written to have been two, but I meant to say that it was all during the same incident.
good luck getting a secret clearance witht hat misdameanor…concealed weapon when not authorized isa HUGE one.
otherwise the military isnt like other jobs where you are trying to be qualified for them…more of as long as you’re not disqualified you’re good.
I would just go talk to a recruiter.
38 years old is pushing it a bit, but seeing that you’re not prior-service (?) and have a degree your best bet is OCS (Officer Candidate School). Eagle scout I believe might help you out a bit too. You’ll have to get a waiver for the drug possession regardless if it’s been pardoned or not (I think) and it’s really backed up right now so that would be the biggest hurdle. My friend has the same charge and has been waiting for a waiver since mid-May and they say he might not get it until october.
Your best bet is to go bring this to a recruiter and see what he can do for you. I’m not gonna lie– it’s getting really tight trying to get into the Army/Reserves/NG. I was hoping for something engineering-related when I enlisted and the only options I got were all combat roles with the exception of combat engineer which is both I guess.
I can’t imagine they would grant you a Secret upon initial enlistment with your background:
One conviction –> misdemeanors possession of marijuana/paraphernalia + concealed weapon (Aug 2000 – North Carolina – family vacation) – pardon pending via NC gov
- Two traffic tickets + expired drivers license charge
- No drug history post-Aug 2000.”
sounds like more than one conviction, pardon pending, even if granted you were still charged. National Security checks look at charges, arrests and fines paid even if charges are dropped, expunged, sealed, found innocent etc. They think of it as where there is smoke there could be fire. Once you are in for a while you maybe able it obtain a Secret. Even for a job not requiring a clearance you still will need a waiver and it may or may not be granted.
Military has it own category of charges, Serious Offenses (between a misdemeanor and felony), they Military places certain charges there. Your drug one and weapons will probably fall into that category.
Look this is what they ask you on a clearance background check, criminal past, fiances, where you have lived, who you know, referances, where you have worked, where you went to school. you can only try with the criminal background the worst they can say is no.
