I miss the days when you could just walk into an office and the job was yours. I still think going into the building of a company is the best way, but it seems like when you do that, they won’t let you speak to their manager, and they/the receptionist immediately tell you to fill out an application on line. If you fill out an application on line, then you are just another number, not a face with a name, and you will be overlooked along with the other 100 people that filled out an application on line! Also, when I do it online, I usually notice that they want to know if you found their application through Monster.com, Career Builders.com, Jobs.com, etc. which means their applications are on several different web cites, meaning that your chance of getting that job is slim to none since everyone and their mama are filling them out, so instead of 100, make it 1000 or more; especially in this economy! One company I stopped in (that WAS hiring) even told me they weren’t aloud to give out their own business card with the web cite on it so that I COULD fill out the application on line!? I had to search for the web cite for an hour before I found it, and when I tried to call them the next week to check up with them, they told me that they weren’t even the location that was hiring and they couldn’t give me the number for it either b/c they weren’t aloud to, and they didn’t accept job calls anyway, and she was also snappy and short with me about it! This is so frustrating! It’s like whether I go in personally, or fill out applications online, I still won’t get a job! I’m starting to feel a little hopeless. Even the gas stations and McDonalds make you go online! What am I supposed to do??
By the way, recruiters need not answer this question, (and I know who you are; it’s absurdly obvious!). The last thing I want to hear about is some get rich quick scam, so please do not waste my time or send me your web cites. To all others, thanks for your help and keep it coming!!
The days you miss are gone I am afraid so you need to go with whatever the application process is…or don’t apply. However, it is surprising how many people find jobs through people they know so you could try doing a bit of networking if you prefer.
The world has changed………….
Reminder: We are in a world-wide Recession. The employers can just sit back and wait until the best apply.
Check out your local Public Library – they have lots of great books on apply for jobs. They also have computers that you can use to apply for jobs.
Check out your local Employment Office – they have lots of great classes on this subject.
Good luck (to us all).
Liz I agree with you 100% I understand trust me. I have always had a bad attitude towards people who say do it online. Your just a paper on the internet with your information they dont know you. I rather go in person and see them. I hate doing anything over the internet like that.
I recently went to a vet business probably wont get the job but at least I tried. I handed in my resume by coming in. and when i got a interview i was so happy. the lady told me she hasnt hired in YEARS and she did not think so many people would want a part time job doing work like this. 75 people applied to that job 15 only got interviews and I was one them. You wanna know why its because of my cover letter my cover letter was really good and at least said the word animal which has something to do with the job
My advice to you is look for smaller business and make a wicked good cover letter that will tell them your full potential without them seeing you. I hope I helped
