I am reaching out to the Yahoo community for my son who got out of the Army just two months ago and would like to start this business. He’s already made brochures and business cards and have passed out a large amount of them with no replies. He (and I) would greatly appreciate your ideas. Thank you in advance!

Business cards, maybe he could start playing golf, guys at the golf course covet the way the course looks and would pay big money for a personal landscaper. Also he could start a youtube channel and make funny commercials. He could go to home depot and pass his flyers that he made up.Persistence is the key.One costumer at a time.
Name the business 1st Cut Free Lawn Care, then advertise FREE services on craigslist, get the jobs, go do a great job and win them as a paying client. I would hire someone with that approach hands down.

Handing out flyer’s is a great idea that works really well…. But you have to know a few tricks of the trade first. The fact that you haven’t had any responses would suggest you have room for improvement. (Don’t worry, this is a good thing… It means that you will be able to crush the competition when you have mastered a couple of the “NInja tricks.”)
First of all, people have some incredibly unrealistic expectations when they hand out their lawn care business flyer’s. If you have posted out 20 then quite simply shouldn’t expect a response at all. On average people get a 0.5% to 3% response rate from their flyer’s So in other words if you hand out 200 fliers, it is common to get one phone call.
Now obviously once you improve your fliers you can increase your response rate. When I was building out my lawn care business I able consistently get a 7% response rate, which is really great. I made a habit of mailing 200 per week. Before I knew it I had four staff and a booming little business that gave financial freedom. Yay!
So what makes a good flyer? Well that’s a very big question that has many books dedicated to answering it. Here is a very brief answer.
First of all no one cares about your son’s business! So don’t put your the business name as the headline! Instead, make shure the headline is filled with benefits. Why should they use your business rather than the one down the road?
Never concentrate on building you brand! This is a big one that I see many people fall victim to!
To build a brand cost a heck of a lot of money. Sure it works great for coke and nike but that is because they have a huge amount of cash to burn. Instead your fliers should require a direct response. I.E Call us now to save 75% on your first mow.
Get rid of your so called FUNNY/ CATCHY slogan. “You grow it, we mow it” may sound witty to you, but as a customer, it doesn’t encourage me to choose you over the competition. Instead have a really power full guarantee. Something like, “We guarantee you will be 100% satisfied that not only will we give you your money back but we will even pay $20 towards you getting a new a new Lawn care profesional. Trust me this works well! And No. most people won’y rip you off!!
This is a really brief description of what to do. I hope it helps. If you want a much more detailed step by step guide then I suggest you download the free book from http://www.lawnsplop.com
