you could post to your local classifieds. search ‘your city’ classifieds. I would recommend craigslist.com

I think giving out business cards is a good idea. I know someone who does freelance work and she told me that I should get business cards made if I ever want to become a MUA (which I’ve been thinking about lately). Do you have any pics of your work? I’d love too see it!

Business cards are a first, but in your industry, it probably makes the most sense to partner with local salons, etc, talk to the owners and work out an arrangement to put brochures in their stores. On the back of the brochures, put “Happily Referred By” and put their business name in there, obviously customized for each store. Offer them a finder’s fee for helping you out when they send a lead your way.

You can also take the online route, and market yourself online:

List your firm on google maps. When people search “makeup artist”, you will come up. You can also start asking for people to write recommendations for you on google maps. That way, when people search, they will see you have positive reviews and will call you.
Also build a website and include in the name what city you are in and makeup artist. Google picks up key words faster from the title of the website.

Once you get going, the referrals will come.
