I had an interview yesterday with a well known bank. It seemed to go really well, they told me I had the skills they were looking for. They seemed really excited when I left and I was told several times I would be getting a call, They even gave me their business cards. When the interview was set up I was told I would have an answer the same day, but now I have to wait. I’m sure I made some mistakes because I was nervous, will that count against me? Does the reaction I got mean something good or was it just a coverup? I never had to go through this before, how long should wait to call check the hiring status. Was it a good idea to send thank you notes to my interviewers?

Yes, an immediate thank you note is in order. They may have more people to interview before making a decision. I would wait a week after the interview and then call to see if they have made any decisions. You might still get a call saying you were chosen. Best of luck to you.
Yes, ALWAYS send a thank you note. Sometimes you will get a call later that day for a second interview and sometimes it will take a couple of weeks, even if the interviewer tells you it will be sooner. If you don’t hear anything in a week, call and check in. Politely inquire if second round interviews have been set up. Even if you find out you did not get a second interview, always be gracious and polite. You never know when you may run into someone in that company again, even after you get a job!
Justme is correct. Immediate follow up thank you notes sent to the people you spoke with or if you have their email address send an email. Shows professionalism and also gives you the opportunity to review your qualifications and address anything else, even admitting you may have been a bit nervous. A sample email follow up I use is below, but make yours unique to you and your particular industry. Make sure to let them know you are very interested in the position and qualified.
In one position I had it took ONE MONTH!! before I got the final call with an offer even after they said they would get back to me “soon”. Patience and professional follow up (don’t be a pest and understand they are busy, too) is the key. Good luck!
