It is not, I would fight for it. If the car is to be used for strict business purposes, then the business should pay for insurance on the car as well as the car itself. There is absolutely no reason that you should have to have you insurance cover the rental car for a company use. That is just plain out stupid and is probably your boss just being too cheap to pay for it and figures he can bully you into doing it. I would say to fight for them to pay for it. That is not being a problem employee, that is be an employee concerned about the fairness and overall depiction of the compan and its ethics. It is completely unethical for them to make you pay.

What your employer is doing is illegal. Your insurance company can and will drop you like a bad rash if they find out you are using your personal vehicle for business purposes and end up getting into an accident or using personal insurance for a company rental. Your employer should not expect you to use your own personal vehicle or insurance when on the job. They should pay for a rental car and the respective insurance for it as well. You should not have to shell out a dime or be legally responsible for rental insurance. Start looking for another job and tell your employer that what they are doing is illegal and unethical business practice. If any employer of mine would expect me to use my own personal insurance for a rental car to be used for company business, my answer would be a quick “Go F**K yourself” because I will not jeopardize my personal insurance or for someone else’s company.

I would contact a insurance company, even your own, and ask anonomously about this. I believe they call it fraud. It may be reportable as a crime.

as said your own insurance company will drop you in a flash ,you cant even use your own car for business porposes unless you add the extra coverage.if they fire you over this you would have a strong wrongfull dismissal suit.your personal car insurance will cover a rental for personal use if you need one because of breakdown etc

For less than $10 per day (at most rental companies) you can purchase a “Loss Damage Waiver” that covers the rental car 100% for damage and theft! Full coverage, including one million dollars in liability coverage can be had for $30 per day or less. Since this charge is added to your bill, and charged to the credit card you used to rent the car (company card?) you might be able to get coverage from the rental company and solve the problem. If your company’s travel policy strictly prohibits purchasing this coverage, then you’ve got a problem.

In most states the coverage you purchase from rental agents is “primary” that is damages are paid from this coverage first. Your own auto/homeowners policy would only have to cover what the primary policy does not. Be aware that violating the rental agreement (unauthorized drivers, driving off road, intentional misuse/abuse of the vehicle, or using the vehicle to tow, etc) may invalidate the coverage you purchase.
